What is PCI PIN?

The PCI PIN Security Standard sets the requirements for the secure management, processing and transmission of Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and the cryptographic keys that protect them during payment card transactions. It covers the cryptographic key lifecycle, PIN processing methods and the secure use of equipment such as HSMs and PIN entry devices.

Who needs to comply with PCI PIN?

The standard applies to acquiring institutions and the agents responsible for PIN transaction processing, including:

  • Acquirers and acquirer processors

  • Encryption Support Organizations (ESOs)

  • Key Injection Facilities (KIFs)

  • Certificate Authorities and Registration Authorities

  • Entities managing hardware security modules and cryptographic key operations

As with the other PCI standards, whether you are required to validate compliance is set by your payment brand, acquirer or other compliance-managing entity rather than by the Council.

PCI PIN compliance in three steps

PCI PIN Gap Analysis

Ahead of the formal assessment, a detailed review of your payment environment, key management practices and security controls identifies gaps against the PCI PIN requirements and sets out a clear remediation path with the effort quantified.

Remediation Assistance

Where gaps are found, you get targeted support to close them and bring the environment up to the standard the assessment requires. Work is prioritized by what stands between you and a clean assessment.

PCI PIN Assessment & Compliance Reports

The assessment is conducted on-site and covers interviews with key stakeholders and a review of network diagrams, key management procedures, processes and policies. You receive the Report on Compliance and Attestation of Compliance needed for card brand submission.

Speak to an expert

Your starting point depends on how much of your PIN environment has been assessed before and when your next submission is due. Talk to an advisor about where to begin.
