Job Role & Responsibilities

Penetration testing is an assessment of the different elements that comprise an information system or product with the goal of finding and documenting the vulnerabilities present. The resultant report is used, along with threat reports and other information sources, to form part of a risk assessment that can be used to drive security improvements.

The role of a Cyber Security Test Consultant is to:

  • Ensure that any testing activity is lawful, compliant with all relevant regulations and within the agreed scope
  • Conduct technical security tests against the information system or product with the aim of identifying vulnerabilities
  • Communicate the results of the tests at a level tailored to the audience
  • Provide technical consultancy and recommendation

Role Description

SFIA Responsibility Level 3: Applies knowledge and contributes to the successful delivery of penetration testing services

Works under general supervision and on discrete tasks when performing penetration tests

  • Demonstrates an analytical and systematic approach to penetration testing, and is able to apply their own initiative and discretion
  • Understands and is able to apply appropriate tools and techniques during a penetration test, and works in accordance with relevant legislation and standards
  • Performs penetration tests, which may be complex and non-routine, in a variety of environments
  • Works as part of a larger team, is responsible for planning and monitoring their own work, and assists senior colleagues in delivering successful penetration tests
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills with colleagues, and when providing input to written reports and presentations
  • Has regular working level contact with customers
  • Is actively developing their understanding of penetration testing, and understands how penetration testing is to be applied and delivered to a customer

What you bring to Us

Experience of applying in-depth knowledge and experience of at least one specific area and applying a broad understanding across a wide field in a variety of situations.

Previously may have held a position such as security or IT engineer or software developer and may be degree level educated.

  • Strong inter-personal skills, especially in handling contacts of all types and at all levels.
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of own area of expertise, including awareness of current developments.
  • Develops awareness, and in some cases detailed knowledge, of areas outside own area of expertise as appropriate.
  • Takes innovative approaches to problem solving and devises creative solutions.
  • Conveys a level of confidence and professionalism, positively influencing and persuading others to take a course of specific action when there is no direct command.
  • CESG Certified Professional (CCP) as Pen Tester – Practitioner Level
  • ISC2 Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
  • Member of the British Computer Society (MBCS)
  • EC-Council CEH
